Courtney King-Dye's Riders4Helmets Video
I’m sure you’ve heard Courtney King-Dye’s story. King-Dye, an American Olympian, suffered a terrible accident when the horse she was schooling tripped and fell. Unfortunately, she wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time. I can’t recall the exact extent of her injuries, but it was something to the effect of a skull fracture and brain damage, and was in a coma for a length of time.
As chance would have it, I was at the North American Junior/Young Rider Championships over the weekend and got to watch the Freestyle dressage tests. I was thrilled to see the number of dressage riders sporting helmets in the arena. I could count on one hand—actually, probably less than one hand—the number of riders wearing the traditional top hat.
Personally, I’m glad to see this change. As someone who’s broken a helmet in a fall and walked away unscathed, I firmly believe in helmets and hope others who aren’t believers might change their minds after seeing this video.
NAJYRC is Here!
It’s that time of year again. The North American Junior/Young Rider Championships will return to the Kentucky Horse Park this week. I’ll be working with the United States Equestrian Federation this weekend on coverage. Keep an eye on USEF.org for all the updates from the competitions!
Cheers,
Erica
Things Are Coming Along
Hi all,
In between my day job at The Horse, writing for several other magazines, and riding and caring for Dorado, I’ve been slowly updating the new site. I’ve started on the portfolio page, and I’m now in the process of uploading PDFs of magazine articles and photographs.
I also have just joined Google+, so if you’re on there, please add me to your circles and I’ll do the same!
Finally, we just got the August issue of The Horse back from the printers and it looks great! Watch for it in your mailboxes soon if you subscribe! If you don’t subscribe yet, check it out…it’s a great resource on horse health for owners.
Hope you’re all having a great weekend!
Cheers,
Erica
